Signs and Symptoms of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

Symptoms present an array of levels, from mild to severe.

  • Difficulty focusing/paying attention
  • Impulsive behaviors
  • Acting before thinking about consequences
  • Misbehaving
  • Difficulty at school/with friends and family members
  • Frequent daydreaming
  • Squirming/fidgeting
  • Frequent lapses of memory/loss of personal items
  • Talking too much/inability to listen
  • High risk-taking/careless mistakes
  • Cannot resist temptation/can't take turns
  • Relationship problems

The Three Types of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

These types of disorders depend on which symptoms are strongest. These symptoms change over time but never go away, however, our doctors can help manage symptoms.

  • Inattentive Presentation: disorganized, struggles to finish tasks, pay attention, follow instructions, conversations, distracted easily, forgetful
  • Hyperactive-Impulsive Presentation: fidgets, talks too much, can't sit still, increased running, jumping, climbing, restless, impulsive, interrupting, grabbing things from people, inappropriate conversation, difficulty waiting a turn or accepting directions, increased accidents/injuries
  • Combined Presentation: a combination of the above

Medical researchers can't find a single reason for this disorder. However, there appears to be some relationship with genetics, and possibly brain injury, exposure to risks in the environment such as lead, the mother's use of alcohol/drugs during pregnancy, and low birth weight. Lifestyle factors such as too much sugar or television probably don’t help symptoms, but do not appear to be the cause.

Researchers improve treatment options yearly, such as behavior therapy, training for parents, medication with close monitoring, frequent doctor visits, and lifestyle changes. Some important lifestyle factors include:

  • Increased healthy eating habits
  • Structured physical activity
  • Limiting electronic devices
  • Getting great sleep every night
